Upstairs is cream enamel, terrazzo, and brass -- a showroom, an observation lounge, and the office of the President. The chute is the only interface between floors: goods up; orders, among other things, down. The chute never closes.

The President has a name. It is on the paperwork. It is not used at the facility. He watches every crate come up himself. “Someone should keep an eye on them,” he has said.
